Let's meet – Jaryna, Estonian Refugee Council volunteer

09.05.2022

Born in Kyiv but moved to Estonia in 1974, Jarõna has been answering the help-line as a volunteer at the Estonian Refugee Council since March 9. She has consistently helped to bring clarity to the confusing world and has been of great help both to ordinary citizens and officials. In addition to answering calls five days a week, Jaryna helped find shelter in Estonia for eight refugees and two dogs, who she takes care of to this day.

Jaryna speaks Estonian, Ukrainian, English, Russian and Czech, as well as Polish on a conversational level. Graduated from the former ERKI (now the Estonian Academy of Arts) as a graphic artist, Jaryna enjoys drawing and has dedicated her career to art. Her works can be seen in children's books, exhibition halls and on the Facebook page Jarõna Drawings. She has always tried to make the world a better place by means of art, having offered art therapy to children of eastern Ukraine. Today she continues doing that in Estonian schools.

The war started against the homeland saddens Jaryna to the bottom of her heart: “Having visited eastern Ukraine many times and seen how buildings were being gradually rebuilt and restored after the 2014 attacks, it is painful to watch the destruction again." She would never have thought that she would experience a full-scale war in her life, and she does her best to help the victims of it.
